Resizing is for a ring that is too tight or too loose, after the shank has been looked at. Re-shanking strengthens a shank that has worn thin. Straightening brings back a ring that has been bent. That is not the same job as repairing a broken chain or resetting a loose stone. Those jobs are on the jewelry repair page.
Surface work is about shine and finish. Rhodium plating restores the white surface on white gold. High-gloss polishing takes out scratches. A brushed surface can be made again when the design should stay matte. If only the shine is gone, and nothing is broken, gold polishing is often the right job.

When polishing is the better service
When the shine is gone and nothing is broken. Gold polishing restores the surface. It does not replace a part and it does not change the form.
When redesign is appropriate
When you want to use gold or stones you already have for another design. That is jewellery redesign, not a repair of the old form.
